NetHack: The Greatest Game You Will Ever Play
![]()
There are no two ways about it. NetHack is the greatest game you will ever play.(com)
In continuous development since 1987, NetHack is the deepest and most challenging video game ever made. It’s also the great-granddaddy of modern dungeon-crawlers like Diablo. But, in a shockingly unexpected surprise twist, Diablo proves to be absolute crap compared to its ancient predecessor.
Through the efforts of over 100 developers working for over 20 years, NetHack has been tempered into a mind-bogglingly vast experience that tests players’ wits like few other games.
I stumbled upon NetHack a couple of years ago — just about 20 years late to the party — and was completely hooked. I’ve played regularly ever since, with far-off pie in the sky ideas of ascending (winning)…someday. At a time when my lifelong interest in video games seemed to be waning, NetHack charmed the time right out of my minutes satchel.
I could go on. But why don’t you just check out TheGreatestGameYouWillEverPlay.com, my love song for NetHack…and then check out the the game! It’s free. And it runs on just about anything.

Jude Brown says:
Interesting page, and very pretty! A tiny nit-pick: inscribing “Elbereth” invokes (in the sense of calling upon someone, specifically in this instance, a god, for aid; a prayer is usually an invocation), rather than evokes (which relates to something caused in a person’s mind or imagination).

Thanks for the correction, Jude! I’ve made the fix.
